Barns get painted quilts

BURLINGTON - Boone County could some day have at least two dozen barns each with a painted quilt for passers-by to view.

The Florence Women's Club is leading this public art project which is in several other counties in the nation.

Joyce Foley, the club's immediate past president, said the goal is to have quilts done all over the county during the next two years.

"We want to provide public art. We want to preserve our heritage in some small way, in this case quilting," she said. "And we want to pull people off the highway and have them drive all over Boone County finding these quilt blocks so that they can see what wonderful things we have in Boone County."

The first painted quilt in Boone County as part of the project was placed on a Hathaway Road barn near Union. Other quilts are planned in places such as Belleview, Petersburg Road and the Dinsmore barn on Burlington Pike.

A quilt was placed on an East Bend Road barn in Burlington on April 20. Bob Maurer owns that barn that already had two smiley faces on it before the quilt was added.

"I just thought it'd be neat to have one on it," said Maurer who raises hay and sheep.

The club is trying to raise money in the community to fund the project. To help or to participate, contact Foley at 525-2451.
